We visited temples and mosques in Kuala Lumpur, including Batu Caves, the Jamek Mosque and the Federal Territory Mosque. October is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon storms: it pays to head out early, when skies are usually clearer and sightseeing is more bearable.

1🏙️ Petronas Towers

The undisputed symbol of Malaysia and the tallest twin towers in the world: 451.9 m and 88 floors. Designed by Argentine architect César Pelli and opened in 1998, their steel-and-glass structure echoes the geometric patterns of Islamic art.

2⛲ Lake Symphony

A free show of fountains dancing to music and coloured lights on the lake in KLCC Park, at the foot of the towers. It runs every night.

3🏮 Chinatown and Petaling Street

Centred on Petaling Street, it is one of the most vibrant, colourful and historic areas of the city, full of street art and very photogenic. Petaling Street is the main pedestrian street, covered by a large green structure: day and night it fills with market stalls, and its real charm is the atmosphere and the traditional street food that has been served there for decades.

4🎨 Kwai Chai Hong

A historic alley (Lorong Panggung) restored with great taste. Its interactive 3D murals portray the daily life of Chinese immigrants in the 1960s and 70s, and the colonial houses around it are now modern cafés.

5📚 BookXcess Rex KL bookshop

A surprising bookshop inside the old, historic Rex Cinema. It keeps the cinema's raw concrete structure and creates a maze of tall shelves, wooden staircases and narrow passages: an absolute paradise for photography.

6🧧 Guan Di Temple

Just a few metres apart you can see Malaysia's rich religious diversity. This bright-red Chinese Taoist temple is dedicated to the god of war and literature, and the air is always filled with the smoke of huge spiral incense coils.

7🛕 Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Right on the next street, the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur. Its façade is a 22-metre tower (gopuram) decorated with intricate sculptures of Hindu deities.

8🔮 Sin Sze Si Ya Temple

The oldest Taoist temple in Kuala Lumpur (1864). It is much smaller and more modest than Thean Hou, but it has an unmatched historic charm: wooden beams darkened by decades of incense and a mystical atmosphere where locals come to have their fortune read.

9🏯 Thean Hou Temple

A six-level architectural masterpiece dedicated to Mazu, goddess of the sea, blending elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Set on Robson Heights hill, it offers panoramic views of the city. Its red pillars, curved golden roofs and carved dragons and phoenixes stand out. The upper courtyard is permanently decorated with hundreds of red and yellow Chinese lanterns, and on dates such as Chinese New Year or the Mid-Autumn Festival thousands of lights are lit. From the terrace, the classical temples contrast with the skyscrapers on the horizon, including Merdeka 118.

10🕌 Jamek Mosque

Officially Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, it is the oldest surviving historic mosque in Kuala Lumpur (1909). It stands at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, where the city was born in the 19th century. It was designed by British architect Arthur B. Hubback in Mughal and Indo-Saracenic style: red brick, white marble, onion domes and slender minarets among palm trees.

11🌆 Merdeka 118

Officially Merdeka Maybank Tower, it is a colossal neofuturist skyscraper and the second tallest building in the world at 678.9 m, behind only the Burj Khalifa; it is also the tallest in Southeast Asia. “Merdeka” means independence in Malay: its silhouette and 158 m spire are inspired by the gesture of Tunku Abdul Rahman raising his hand as he proclaimed independence in 1957, at Merdeka Stadium right next door. Designed by Australian studio Fender Katsalidis, its façade has 18,144 triangular glass panels that echo traditional Malaysian art and crafts. At night, 8.4 km of LED strips light up its geometric structure.

12🕌 Federal Territory Mosque

One of Kuala Lumpur's architectural jewels (opened in 2000), with room for 17,000 worshippers. It is inspired by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul and Ottoman art, combined with Malay elements. It is designed as a “mosque in a garden”, among greenery and fountains, with 22 turquoise domes of glazed mosaic.

13🐒 Batu Caves

One of the holiest Hindu shrines outside India, on a limestone hill about 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur. It is guarded by the golden statue of Lord Murugan (42.7 m, the tallest of this god), and you climb a staircase of 272 steps painted in rainbow colours. The Temple Cave (Cathedral Cave) is the main one: a vault more than 100 m high with Hindu altars and a naturally open ceiling that lets the sunlight in; entry is free. To the left of the stairs is the Ramayana Cave (paid, about 5 RM), with statues and colourful lighting that tell the epic of the Ramayana.

14🌳 Perdana Botanical Gardens

One of the most beautiful green spaces in Kuala Lumpur. If you enjoy photography, it is worth exploring them slowly: you will find lakes, tropical vegetation, bridges and corners full of texture.

15🦜 Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Inside the gardens is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park (Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur), the city's famous bird park, where you can see:
